artist statement
My father was an architect in an era of function and budget over form and beauty. His desire for the luxury of artistic license would never be tapped. All of my work relates to my father as he smiles down.

Form always wins over function. Kiln size is my only limitation but just requires creativity to overcome. My structures have always been somewhat "architectonic" in shape; I inherited that by exposure. The handbuilt forms are labor intensive and made from slabs. These slabs give the work their two-dimensional, sleek look. Many layers of color, sanding, carving and rubbing are used to achieve the desired result. If I don't like it, it goes back for more.

The pieces tend to take on a personality, whether cocky or stoic that comes from the pleasure I get making them and the care they get during the process.
